Results for primary races steadily rolled in throughout the Buckeye State the evening of Mar. 15.
In the Democratic presidential primary, the Associated Press projected former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as the victor over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders by a 56.5-42.7% margin. On the Republican side, Ohio’s sitting Governor, John Kasich, took first place over New York businessman and current frontrunner Donald Trump 46.8-35.6%. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz came in third receiving 13.1% of the vote.
The two major parties also held contested primaries for U.S. Senate. Incumbent Republican Sen. Rob Portman defeated his opponent Don Eckhart 82.2-17.8%. In a three-way Democratic race, former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland beat Cincinnati City Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld 65-22.4%. Occupational Therapist Kelli Prather came in third with 12.6%.
In the 6th U.S. Congressional district, in which Marietta College resides, incumbent Republican Bill Johnson and his Democratic challenger Belpre Mayor Michael Lorentz both ran unopposed for their party’s nomination.
The nation-wide 2016 general election will be held in the autumn on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
