The Marietta College Softball team have been perfect this far into the season. With a spring break trip to the Space Coast under their belt, Marietta looks to host their first home game of the season in the BSN Sports Softball Classic with a 10-0 record.
Marietta was going to begin their season with a match against Denison University however the series was postponed. Hence, the softball season began during Etta’s Spring Break when the team traveled to Viera, Florida for the Space Coast Spring Games held at the Space Coast Complex.
This trip began on Saturday, March 8th with a game that ended due to the Mercy Rule. The game ended in the sixth inning as Marietta scored three runs to extend their lead to 9-0 over River University.
The second day started with a match with Emerson College. Emerson started out with a three-run lead but a five run fifth inning by the Pioneers kept the game alive. The Pioneers were able to keep their lead and defeat Emerson 10-6. Right after Marietta began their game with Webster University whom they beat 4-1.
The Pioneer offense prompted the Mercy Rule in two of their next four games. First, on Monday, the Pios activated the Mercy Rule after an 11-2 lead over Wheaton College. For their second game on Monday the Pioneers put up five in the second to secure a 7-2 win over Nebraska Wesleyan. On Wednesday Etta shut out Wisconsin Lutheran 7-0 and scored 13 unanswered runs to end the game in the fifth over Cornell College. The final score was 13-2.
On Thursday Marietta held a close match against Monmouth College. Teams would be tied at one a piece until the sixth inning when pinch hitter Adisson Heath got an RBI for the Pios. Senior Taylor Airy secured the win in the seventh with an RBI giving Etta a 4-1 win.
Their next match that day was a rematch with Wheaton College. While this game lasted until the seventh, the result was much the same. The Pioneers shut out the Thunder 4-0.
In Marietta’s final game they’d face off against the Monmouth Fighting Scots again. This time the Scots came out to an early lead scoring 6 in the first two innings compared to the Pioneers 2. Monmouth held this 6-2 lead until the 5th when the Pioneers scored 8. The following inning Marietta added two more runs to take a 12-6 lead for the win. This win improved their record to 10-0 on the season.
The BSN Sports Classic will take place on March 22nd and 23rd. Marietta will play a series with both Penn State Behrend and Hiram College.
