In 2025, Marietta College will celebrate an exciting milestone. That being its 190th anniversary. Founded in 1835, Marietta College has played a significant role in education for students from the state of Ohio and beyond, shaping generations of students and contributing to the growth of the Marietta community. Marietta College has adapted to the changing needs of students and the community, offering a wide range of undergraduate and a few graduate programs.
The college was originally charted in 1797 as Muskingum Academy and was the first institution of higher education in the Northwest Territory. This effort was led by Rufus Putnam. Putnam believed in the importance of establishing an education for the territory and later led an effort in the founding of Ohio University in Athens. Eventually this academy involved into the college we know as today.
Throughout its history, Marietta College has been known for its strong commitment to providing a well-rounded, liberal arts education. It has also been a top competitor of the best colleges across the country for petroleum engineering. Its departments have won numerous awards, allowing students to receive the best education. One of those awards being ranked #3 for Best Value Schools in the Midwest by U.S News and World Report.
There have been notable alumni to come out of the college, with mentions of the NFL, Hollywood, the MLB, and others. Additionally, the college has passed a few personal records in athletics in the last few years, which has increased awareness and excitement for recruitment from potential students when deciding where to commit. The college continues to grow in all aspects, which makes it an exceptional institution to receive an education from.
Though this small private college in the Mid-Ohio Valley may not be easily found on the map, 190 years shows that the college has had a lot to offer in almost two centuries. Its long history shows the dedication of faculty, staff, students, and alumni who have worked together to build a long-lasting academic community. Throughout its years, the college has adapted to changes in the educational system while maintaining its commitment to providing a high-quality education. As Marietta College celebrates this milestone, it continues to stand as an opportunity for students seeking to make a difference in their communities and the world.
