With a snap of your finger and the swish of the net, basketball season at Marietta College is getting into full swing again. The men’s basketball team looks to continue their success into this upcoming season. The 2021-2022 season was one of the most successful seasons in Marietta College history reaching the Final Four in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The team went a perfect 17-0 in conference play and 29-3 in a race to win a national championship. The team would win the regular season Ohio Athletic Conference title, the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament, and win all four of the games that they hosted to get to the Final Four.
The scene in Fort Wayne was electric from the tip off with energy being brought by both schools. The Marietta College men’s basketball team faced off against one their losses from the regular season, Randolph Macon College, on the biggest stage of Division III basketball. This was the rematch that everyone wanted to see. Back in the regular season Marietta hosted Randolph Macon College at the Great Lake Invitational. That game would be a nail biter for both sides. On average at the beginning of the season it was known that Randolph Macon only allowed sixty-five points to be scored by their opponent, but in the Great Lakes Invitational matchup the Pioneers would score fifty alone in the second half. The Pioneers would end up losing a heartbreaker in the Great Lakes Invitational 74-82. When the teams matched back up in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Marietta was determined to defeat the Yellow Jackets, but Marietta could not get it done falling short of their goal losing 63-81.
It has been 208 days since the team has been in live action, and they could not be more ready to get back on the court. After losing mostly their whole starting line from last year, the team looks to gel their new starting lineup before the first game of the season on November 11th. The team is set to host their Navy Blue and White scrimmage this weekend on Friday October 14th at 7 PM in Ban Johnson Arena, and they hope to see you there.
