Imagine it was a chilly rainy Saturday night with rain drops coming down everywhere you looked, and puddles were forming all around. This is what it was like for the Marietta College versus Baldwin Wallace Saturday Night football game under the lights at Don Drumm Stadium. Fans gathered with their ponchos and umbrellas to see a football game that was electric from both teams.
The lead would change four times in the last two and a half minutes of the game. The Pioneers and Yellow Jackets would exchange touchdowns late in the fourth quarter, giving Baldwin Wallace a 26-21 lead. Sophomore Dawson Snyder would return a kickoff to the 43-yard line, then on the very next play would catch a Connor Vierstra pass for the touchdown. The Pioneers had to decide if they wanted to hit the extra point field goal or successfully attempt a 2-point conversion. The Pioneers were successful with the 2-point conversion with 53 seconds left on the clock making the score 29-26. Unfortunately, six passes later, the Baldwin Wallace Quarterback, Joey Marousek, would throw the gaming winning touchdown pass to Mikel Love. Baldwin Wallace came out on top, 33-29.
The loss puts Marietta College at 2-2 and 1-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while Baldwin Wallace moves to 3-2 with a 3-1 record in conference play. Bryce Agnew carried the ball 28 times rushing for 94 yards for Marietta. Vierstra completed 17 out of 26 passes for 249 yards and four touchdowns. Snyder would end with nine catches for 210 yards and two touchdowns.
“I’m really proud of our guys and their effort on every play tonight,” Marietta head coach Andy Waddle said. “Our offense made some big plays and scored points when we needed. We got out of position a couple of times on defense and Baldwin Wallace was able to take advantage of it.”
The Pioneers return to action on October 8th as they head to John Carroll University for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
