Marietta College Men’s Basketball will soon be back in action later this semester. Last season, the Pioneers had a season drenched in COVID-19 protocols. They only played teams in their conference, and the team also only played on Friday and Saturday in a home and away game.
The Pioneers had a successful season even under the bizarre circumstances in place. The team went 12-1 winning the OAC Conference and the OAC Conference Tournament. They also had athletes receive some awards handed out by the league. Awards were given to Jason Ellis, Mason Lydic, Tim Kreeger, and Lukas Isaly. Ellis received Player of the Year as well as All-OAC First Team. Lydic received Defensive Player of the Year and All-OAC Second Team. Kreeger and Isaly were named All-OAC Honorable Mention.
The Pioneers look to continue their success in the 2021-22 season. The beginning of the season starts at the Roanoke College Tip-Off Tournament in Salem, Virginia. The Pioneers are set to play Christopher Newport University and another team to-be-announced at a later date. After the Roanoke tournament, the Pioneers will come home for one of the biggest tournaments in Division III basketball. The Pioneers will be hosting the Great Lakes Invitation with multiple top ranked teams from Division III. The Pioneers were supposed to host this tournament last year, but due to COVID-19 it was pushed to the 2021-22 season. The Pioneers will face off against Wabash College and Randolph Macon College in this loaded Division III tournament.
With such a successful year last season, the Pioneers look to come back even stronger, returning nearly everyone from last season. The Pioneers are in search of another championship and hopefully, a trip to the NCAA tournament.
